3 Ways to Have Healthier Kids RIGHT NOW!

Somedays it is harder to achieve this than others. We have a few bumps in the road when life gets crazy busy or things don't go as planned. All of a sudden we might turn around and realize that we might have really fallen off track. When that happens you need a quick fix to get yourself back on course.
Or maybe, you are in a good space right now. Things are going along pretty well and you feel you have a handle on the healthy choices you set out to implement into your daily life. (Kudos to you! Seriously!) This is a good time to up your game!
No matter where you are on the spectrum, either feeling a little lost or like you have a handle on things, I know that you want the very best for your family. That is why I want to give you 3 easy ways to have healthier kids RIGHT NOW. These strategies don't involve any planning or long recipes. They are super simple ways that will have a big impact on your children's health the second you start using them!
1. When it comes to food, STOP asking, "What do you want?" and START giving CHOICES!
When it comes to food, open ended questions have the potential to end with an answer you don't feel great about and a meltdown when you don't approve. "What do you want to eat?" might get answers like, "Pizza! Chicken nuggets and french fries! Nachos!"
When you give your child the choice between two things you feel good about, your child is EMPOWERED to make a great decision. (How cool is that?) So, no more, "What do you feel like having?" and start asking, "Would you like carrots with hummus or apples with almond butter?" OR, "Would you like a spinach salad with a hard boiled egg or steamed broccoli with leftover chicken?" BOOM. Done.
2. Replace a packaged snack with a fruit or veggie.
If having a snack means opening up the pantry and taking out a box, a bag or some other container with a logo on it, change that habit by pointing your child in the direction of the fruit bowl or the veggie drawer in the fridge. You can apply this strategy to snacks you pack for school, playdates or after extracurricular activities. As soon as your child asks for a snack, make it a whole food!
3. Kick them out!
That is right!. Kick them out. And you get out with them! Before the kids turn on the TV or a gaming system or bury their nose in a cell phone or tablet, spend some time outdoors. The health benefits of being outdoors everyday include improving focus by giving the brain a break from the constant overstimulation, it boosts your immune system and improves your mood. If you go outside with them, you all get the added benefit of fresh air, exercise and strengthening your bond as a family, too. So, go outside and toss a frisbee or simply go for a walk around the block. Do what suits you best, but definitely get outside today.
