If you know me then you know I am all for starting a Self Care Revolution.

But I know what happens when busy moms STOP and take time out for our own self care:

We feel guilty.

We feel like someone is going to think we are selfish.

We start thinking about how we could be spending that time doing something for someone else.

Am I right?

Oh, of course I am. I KNOW because I have felt that way many times. And even though I have changed my mindset around the idea of self care, I still fall into the trap of "mommy guilt" once in a while.

But here is why it is ESSENTIAL to crowd out that "mommy guilt" with the idea and understanding that self care is actually another ESSENTIAL everyday normal practice, just like brushing our teeth and walking the dog. It HAS to happen because when it doesn't, it is clear to us and everyone else in the world that we skipped it. If you don't brush your teeth, you walk around with stinky breath. Don't walk the dog, she pees on the floor. Pretty concrete consequences.

Well, when we neglect our own self care, it can have physical, mental and emotional effects, some that are obvious, others that maybe aren't. We can be cranky, short tempered, resentful and unable to give our very best effort into anything we might be taking on, whether it is a project at work, cooking dinner for the family or bedtime story time.

However, what happens to us busy moms when we DO shift our mindset and start making time for even the smallest self care practice everyday:

  • We decrease our stress.
  • We develop an overall sense of well being
  • We remember to value ourselves.
  • We are clear headed.
  • We work harder.
  • We make better choices.
  • We feel happier, more positive and grateful!

There are many ways to practice self care but I am going to focus on just one for now: DRY BRUSHING.

One of the biggest reasons I love dry brushing so much is because it is so easy to start incorporating once you pick up your own dry brush (I will include an affiliate link at the bottom for the dry brush I use and love.) Incorporating dry brushing as a self care practice can be as simple as adding 5 minutes BEFORE your shower in the morning or the evening.

Personally, I love to get up before everyone else in the house (like I did this morning) grab some lemon water and spend 5-6 minutes brushing my skin. In addition to feeling awesome, it has a number of health benefits as well.

Dry brushing:

  • Exfoliates the the skin
  • Reduces cellulite by breaking up hard fat deposits and redistributing fat more evenly.
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system.
  • Stimulates circulation.
  • Feels freaking amazing. (That is a scientific term, of course.)

According to an article in Mind, Body, Green  by Lee Sutherland, here is how you do it:

  1. Start on dry skin before bathing.
  2. Work in gentle circular, upward motions, then longer, smoother strokes.
  3. Always begin at the ankles in upwards movements towards the heart - the lymphatic fluid flows through the body towards the heart, so it's important that you brush in the same direction.
  4. Your back is the only exception to the preceding rule; brush from the neck down to the lower back.
  5. After you've finished with the ankles, move up to the lower legs, thighs, stomach, back and arms. Be cautious of softer and sensitive skin around the chest and breasts, and never brush over inflamed skin, sores, sun-burnt skin, or skin cancer.
  6. Ensure you shower to wash away the dead skin cells and impurities.
  7. Tip: alternating temperatures in the shower from hot to cold will further invigorate the skin and stimulate blood circulation, bring more blood to the outer layers of the skin.
  8. Then follow it up with a slick moisturizer to nourish the skin.

Sounds awesome, right?
