Yoga Goals (Another Part of the Self Care Revolution)

It doesn't matter if I am in a full class of 25 people or alone in my living room, there is something amazing about finding myself on my yoga mat. Because I have been blessed with some amazing yoga teachers, I have learned that when I am on my mat, nothing else matters: not what is happening on other mats, not my "To Do" list, not the day-to-day stresses, nothing.

All that matters in that moment in time is me and my practice. 

My yoga practice is an area in my life where I have recently set some new goals. If I can be totally honest with you, I absolutely love yoga but don't have enough of it in my life. Doesn't make much sense, does it?

Well, we are all a beautiful work in progress and that is why this is an area in my life where I have decided to make some improvements.... but I will get to that. 

You might already know that there are different types of yoga. I have tried many and love each that I have tried in a different way. For me, there are many things that happen during practice:

  • My busy mind suddenly quiets down.
  • I remember to breathe. 
  • I appreciate my body for what it can achieve on the mat.
  • I notice myself becoming more and more flexible (this coming from the most inflexible chick in the world.)
  • I feel myself getting stronger.
  • I feel centered, calm and clear headed. 
  • By the end, I feel refreshed and ready to get back to the rest of life.

These are things that happen and I notice every single time I practice. Who wouldn't want more of all that in their life, right? 

One of the big positives about yoga is that it is not only good for the body but the mind and soul as well. If you are a busy mom who values effective multi-tasking, yoga can take on many aspects of self care at once. (Again, who doesn't want more of that in their life?) 

There are many self care practices that I have cleared a path for in my life. Many that I include are short and sweet: a glass of lemon water to start the day, a few minutes of journaling, dry brushing, deep breathing/meditation... all practices that I can fit in because they only require a few, easily spared minutes. When life gets busy though, I have found that in the past my yoga practice is what suffers. For whatever reason I always seem to think I need to dedicate huge chunks of time to yoga. I mean, sure that is IDEAL....

...But that is just not necessary. 

Of course my preference is to have dedicated time to go to my favorite yoga space and practice with some of the best teachers around. And I make time for that as often as I possibly can. I know how beneficial the guidance and experience of my teachers are to proper practice, improvement and inspiration. 

But once I started to accept the idea that not having a full hour to dedicate didn't mean all was lost, my practice actually IMPROVED. 

Even if I only had a few short minutes at home, I can still experience all the things yoga brings to my life by using those few minutes in a smart, healthy and self caring way. 

By learning to be flexible (pun intended) I have learned to fit yoga in where ever I can. Sometimes I have time in the morning, sometimes I have a few extra minutes at night, sometimes I clear a few minutes for yoga at 2:15 in the afternoon. 

Whatever works.
