The Healthy Hacks The Spring Brings

Real Moms, Real Health

There are so many things to love about spring.

Especially all of the healthy hacks that come along with this season.

Spring is a time of new life, fresh growth, and cleansing.

If we pay attention we can see it in nature and we can feel feel those same tendencies in ourselves.

It is really not surprising if you think about it, but after a little added sunshine and fresh air we suddenly want to open all the windows, change every bed linen and re-organize “the drawer” in the kitchen. (You know, THAT “catch all” ‘drawer that holds everything from pliers, to matches, to coupons & box tops.)

Come springtime many of us observe a change in our eating habits and a renewed commitment to our healthy habits.

It isn’t by accident either.

What spring is doing in the outside world, we intuitively want to do in our inside world.

But here is the even cooler part.

Mother Nature doesn’t make mistakes. That drive to cleanse, get a little more active, tidy up our healthy habits… well, spring brings along ways to make those things so much easier to embrace than it has been in the winter months.

So not only does nature stir those tendencies in us, she puts all the tools right out there for us! (Love Her!)

3 Healthy Hacks the Spring Brings

Berries

Spring brings fresh berries at every Farmers’ Market and grocery store. Loaded with antioxidants & other nutrients, they are here for us to enjoy so eat up!

What are some fresh ways to enjoy berries this spring?

  • Toss them in your salad! A strawberry and spinach salad or a fresh green salad with blueberries and walnuts are perfect dishes.

  • Add berries to your water to add flavor and nutrients.

  • Pack berries for a snack on your way to park or your child’s softball game.

Fresh air & sunshine

The temperatures are warming up and the days are getting longer.

The outside is calling!

Spring makes it so easy to get some vitamin D, some cleansing fresh air, and an extra bit of exercise. How?

  • Leave the car behind and walk to the store, to school, to the park. While you are at it, leave your phone behind too and really take it all in.

  • Open those windows. Air out the house and enjoy the beautiful breeze.

  • Homework can wait, play outside! Kick or toss a ball back and forth, get out your bikes, or the bubbles, anything. Make the most of the lengthening days.

Greens, greens, and more greens

Greens are sprouting all around us for a reason.

All the fresh green growth makes being healthy easier.

  • Super healthy & cleansing greens are ripe for the picking. Arugula, dandelion greens, lettuces, and watercress are ready in gardens, farmers’ markets and groceries. Dig in!

  • Fresh herbs are sprouting! Thyme, mint, parsley are all waiting for you with their detoxifying qualities and amazing flavors.

  • Green grass is calling. Kick off your shoes and connect to the Earth. Barefoot walks in the yard or a grassy field are awesome. Earthing has many positive effects. Is earthing for you? Take a peek here.

Spring makes it easy to be healthy.

So here is to a happy and HEALTHY springtime! Enjoy!

Spring Cleaning for the Mind, Body & Soul

The birds are singing, the buds are blooming and the days are longer!

Oh, Spring! I have missed you.

I love when spring returns. I always feel energized and inspired. This time of year, more than any other, I feel pumped up and ready to go. This is when I start a dozen or so projects (I am not saying I finish them all, mind you) because the enthusiasm of this season just takes over. I find it so easy to recommit and refocus on all of the things that are most important to me. Not only that, I feel the powerful urge to PURGE on so many levels. My body craves nutritious green juices, my mind needs to organize and declutter and, on a deeper level, I am driven to simplify my life for the sake of my overburdened soul.

It is not uncommon for busy moms like us to need to stop, take a deep breath, and realign ourselves with the ideas and practices that our most important to us.

Spring is a perfect time to do that.

In years past, I can remember wanting to make healthy adjustments to my life with a bit of "spring cleaning" but not knowing where to begin. With that in mind, I put together this useful list for all of us to help get us started. This list should allow us to utilize the inspiration of spring and make the most of it! This is a great starting point for you to spring clean your mind, body and soul.

Here are my 5 ways to Spring Clean for your Mind, Body and Soul:

1. Clean out the fridge and pantry. Get rid of the expired food and the food you no longer want.  Wipe down all of the shelves and doors. Restock with the healthiest choices! Aim for whole, nourishing foods

2. Sort through your clothes. Have any winter clothes that didn't fit right or you didn't put on at all? Time to donate those items to someone who will use them. Go beyond just winter clothes though. Sort through your spring and summer clothes as well. As you sort, be honest with yourself about whether you should hold onto it or let it go. But always hang on to the clothes that make you feel like a rock star. (just saying)

3. Clean emotional "junk". Ill-feelings for another person or grudges have got to go. Use a strategy to free yourself of those kinds of emotional burdens. Journaling, a heart-to-heart talk or a guided meditation are some of the ways that might help you put that stuff behind you. Freeing yourself from those burdens will help you feel refreshed and light.

4. Re-commit to fitness. Take advantage of the warmer weather, the longer days and your extra energy. Try a new fitness routine or get back to one that you love.

5. Clean out the negativity in your life.  Do this simply by crowding it out. Make space for more positivity by consciously inviting more of it into your life. Start your day with a positive mantra, gratitude journal or join this week's healthy challenge in our online community, The Real Moms Collaborative.

Spring is the perfect time to tidy up our life in all essential aspects. This list will give you a quick start to spring cleaning your life: mind, body and soul.
