5 Minutes for Mommy

Just sitting down to write this post made me want to take a huge inhale in..... hold....and release a big, wonderful, cleansing exhale.  

Go ahead.  

You do it, too. 

Breathe in the positivity and love.

Hold that breath.  

Now let it go and release any negativity you are feeling today. 

Go ahead and do that a few more times.  

Feels great, right?

And just like that you took back (not even) 5 minutes for mommy.  

As busy moms sometimes all we feel like we get is 5 minutes for ourselves. We squeeze those 5-minutes in here and there, IF we are lucky. But those 5-minutes can be totally worth it.

When we find the time, we try, try, try to do a little something for ourselves. We take a mental break and maybe even treat ourselves to something in those 5 minutes. 

We deserve and NEED those 5 minutes and THEN SOME.  

But let’s stop and think for a second about how we are using those 5 minutes.  Are we checking Facebook and power-eating a sleeve of Oreos? (Which I have done. Yes, I have.) So, maybe. And well, shoot, seriously sometimes commenting on my girlfriend’s adorable puppy pictures and a mega-sugar rush are the only things saving my kids from the ultimate mommy meltdown, so I might have to go with it.   

 

But if that become a habit, it will become a problem.

Instead of relying on social media and sweet treats when it comes to taking 5-minutes for ourselves, I want to encourage you to change it up.

We can empower those 5 minutes to make us feel refreshed, energized and positive

We can make the most of that little bit of time. 

So, because I love you and I know that sometimes all you get are 5 minutes, here are some of my favorite, tried-and-true healthy, happy swaps that i regularly use to help me make the most of the 5-minutes I get for myself: 

  • Instead of checking social media, listen to 5 minutes of your favorite podcast. 
  • Instead of getting lost in the TV, spend 5 minutes in a new book, trashy or otherwise! 
  • Instead of sitting down with a coffee, make your own matcha green tea. The process is so soothing!  
  • Instead of pouring a little glass of wine in the evening, call your mom, sister or bestie. Hearing your favorite voices is soothing to the soul.  
  • Instead of grabbing a few sweets, pour a tall glass of lemon water.  
  • Instead of catching up on the latest gossip, jot down 3 reasons you are grateful and add that to your gratitude jar.
  • And when all else fails, just breathe. Breathe in the positivity, breathe out the negativity. That might be good enough when it comes to treating yourself well.  

 

 

Sure, the “naughty” 5 minute steals feel good sometimes, but it is what we do MOST of the time that makes the difference. Try some of these healthier swaps for the next time you get 5 minutes to yourself. Tell me if you notice a difference. Something Magical Happened in my Home

I know you might find this really difficult to believe (I did too.) but there has been a bit of magic taking place in my home. With this little bit of magic, some of the most remarkable things have happened and I absolutely had to share with you.  

But first, a quick confession: I have been waiting to share this for fear of totally jinxing it. Yes, I was afraid that if I told you all it would bring this magic to a crashing halt. So I have been holding back until now.

However, at this point it has been a month and the magic is only getting stronger.  So I am taking a chance.

Just the tiniest bit of background here: during our summer in Germany there were many amazing changes that I saw in my children that I was truly hoping I could see continue once the summer ended. I think that maybe I might have hoped and hoped and hoped so much that this magic was the result. 

So here we are with magic alive and well in our home.  

What it has done for my children has been nothing short of miraculous.

They read so much more, sometimes for more than an hour a day. Yea I know. I want to call me a "liar" too, but it is true. Our local area book trader LOVES us.

But there is other stuff too.

Big sister helping my youngest. Melts my heart every time.

They do puzzles, create games, make art, they write letters to friends and cousins. 

They continue to dry the dishes after meals (something that they began doing this summer), they take out the compost, help cook, set the table, and clean up their toys. 

We have family game nights, nights we color together and other nights where we are all just doing our own thing. 

We talk. We talk about what we are reading, we talk about what we are writing in our journals, about school, about the world and about the future. We talk a lot. I feel like we have redefined "quality time" for ourselves in a really special way. It isn't something we have to carve out space for, quality time is a new constant

This sort of magic might be normal in your house but it wasn't for us. Not like this.

Not until we turned off the TV. That is when the magic appeared and then it stayed.

During the month of September we have watched a total of 4 hours of TV. 

4 HOURS. 

We watched Hidden Figures because well, that was just pure awesomeness. 

Then while my son had a sleep over with his cousin, the girls asked if they could watch some Smurf movie. Ok, sure. 

That was it. And that, my friends, was MAGIC.

Not only am I thrilled to pieces over the changes I see in my kids, and even my husband and myself, but it goes to show that when you want to see DIFFERENT RESULTS, you have to go about it in a DIFFERENT WAY. In order to see change, something in our day-to-day lives needed to change. 

If you know you want something in your life to be DIFFERENT and BETTER, make your own magic. Decide what you can do to change that habit. It doesn't have to be something super extreme like eliminating TV from your life. (Although I highly recommend it!) . It just has to be enough to shake up the system a bit and create a different result. And if I can do it, believe me, you can too.

Healthy Dinners for Busy Nights

Let's see, today is Monday... so that means art class for one child, boxing gym for another and at least one responsible adult needs to get to the school event by 7pm. 

As I look at the rest of the week there is kid yoga, kid fitness classes, language class and a few other things that I am probably forgetting. 

I love that my kids are passionate about so many different things and we try to give them the opportunity to experience as much of the things they are interested in as we can. The tricky part is making it all fit and not derail our healthy lifestyle. Their busy schedule can make healthy dinners a challenge. 

However, with a little creative thinking even the busiest mom can make healthy dinners a reality even on those really busy nights! I wanted to share with you a few ideas I use to make sure that we keep up a healthy lifestyle that includes nutritious dinners even when we are busy!

 

Here are 4 creative ways to make healthy dinners work on your busy nights:

  1. Pack an extra lunchbox. Instead of worrying about getting dinner on the table, pack an extra lunchbox when you are preparing lunches for the day. Many families eat on the way to the baseball field or dance studio. Avoid drive-thru's and take-out by packing a second healthy lunchbox.
  2. Eat dinner at 4PM. On night's that we have enough time to sit and eat as a family before activities and extra curriculars, I make a point to definitely do just that. The fact that we do so at 4pm, a little early for what most people think of as "dinner time", but it actually works in our favor. If I have dinner ready at 4PM we can still sit and eat together without the rush. We also get some quality time before the pace picks up! 
  3. Prep dinner in 20-minutes or less. Having a few "go to" recipes and even some "mom hacks" to create quick healthy meals can be a real game changer for busy moms. Leftovers, crockpot and instapot meals as well as simple recipes can all be great ways to create a healthy meal in a snap. Check out this article for more on about dinners in 20 minutes or less! 
  4. Breakfast for dinner. For some reason I have no problem making a big, healthy breakfast quickly. I have a few standard recipes that I use a lot, greens & eggs, zucchini pancakes, pumpkin pancakes, and others. They are easy for me to whip up in no time. So, when I am pressed for a quick meal for dinner I sometimes declare it to be, "Breakfast for dinner night!" and whip up one of my quick and healthy breakfasts! Not only do I still get a healthy meal on the table, but the kids love it!

I know that our kids' after-school schedules can make healthy dinners a challenge but there are ways to have a busy schedule and continue to make eating healthy a priority.
